Industrial HMIs do not provide sufficient diagnostic logging for large control systems.
Allen-Bradley appears to have a migration path but most of the underlying issues will still exist if direct replacements are provided.
In many cases, HMIs are required for operating their corresponding systems. This requires a secondary means on NOT losing valuable system event history.
Many alarms are lost and cannot be saved for use later
Even when HMIs are replaced, the replacements will only provide identical features to minimize operations training and save engineering costs.
Adding more alarms that may be helpful to Maintenance personnel can be annoying to Operations personnel and would clutter the alarm logs
Operator HMIs are designed to operate the system but many times minimize the ability to find necessary status to diagnose problems quickly.
Every system has a different look and feel to find available status and information and many times it is difficult to know what is wrong when problems occur.
When Engineering arrives, alarms have been reset or cleared making it even more difficult to find root causes.
Having a different environment for diagnostics at each install makes it more difficult to train personnel and for personnel new to a system to diagnose problems.
